The Living Heart Project: Realistic Simulation in Medicine

The most dangerous phrase in the language is 'we've always done it this way.'" - Rear Admiral Grace Hopper

What if the automotive and aerospace engineering world shared the same realistic simulation technology with the medical life science world?  What if human hearts could be viewed and analyzed virtually, allowing doctors and surgeons to use advanced simulation techniques currently used to evaluate products before they are built?

Changing medical care with realistic simulation is becoming a reality.  The Living Heart project, launched in January 2014, unites leading researchers and educators, as well as practicing cardiologists on a mission to develop personalized digital human heart models.  This will in turn provide more personalized cardiac-patient care thru digital therapies that use simulation technology to solve medical dilemmas.

Healthcare remains the last frontier of simulation. Virtual models have the potential to provide insight into the human body that laboratory testing cannot, as well as reduce cost and risk. The Living Heart project led by the SIMULIA community seeks to simulate the entire human heart, a complex physics and engineering problem that will take the skills of researchers, device developers and cardiac physicians.
